NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2006
21st Annual General Meeting: On Friday 17th November after all the sold and unsold paintings were collected, the 21st AGM took place. 17 members attended (which did include 10 members of the committee). After discussion about the summer evening events and the current winter programme thanks were given to all those who had arranged these events. The new committee was voted in with only one change. We were very sorry to loose Gordon Cryer from the committee. In his absence the committee thanked him for all the work he has done in the past and his humour will be missed at the meetings. We are pleased to welcome a new member, Rob Turner, to the committee. He is going to be looking into setting up a web site for Plymouth Watercolour Society. Keep your eye out for any further information. Reports from Geoff Gunning about the exhibition, Paul Kemp updated us on the number of members in the society (currently 143 with some new members in the process of joining) and Dennis Veale, the treasurer reported on our financial state. Copies of the treasurers report and minutes of the AGM are available from the secretary on request.SUBSCRIPTIONS 2006/7

SWARTHMORE EXHIBITION, 6TH - 17TH NOVEMBER: PWS AUTUMN EXHIBITION 2006

The 2006 autumn exhibition ran from the 6th to the 17th of November at the Swarthmore Centre, Mutley Plain. 33 Artists submitted 101 pictures and all 101 were hung. This was less than last year, but the general consensus was that the standard of entries was generally slightly better than last year. 19 Pictures sold during the exhibition for a total of £1,499.00.
As usual we enjoyed the support and co-operation of the Swarthmore Centre for which we are very grateful.
The members evening on the 6th November was poorly attended by our members, but enthusiastically supported by our nominated charity the Devon Wildljfe Trust.
A cheque for £374.75 plus the contents of collection boxes (amount not yet know) will be sent to Devon Wildlife Trust.
The £20.00 prize for the Favourite Picture Competition was won by Val Morsman for her painting 'The Wall' which emerged as a clear winner.

Derwent watercolour pencil workshop.
held by Linda Stevens in Polperro
Sat 4th February 06

Being a bit of a novice where watercolour painting is concerned I found the watercolour pencil workshop an absolute must. Thinking the way to use watercolour pencils is as we used them when we were at school. I couldn`t have been more wrong as demonstrated by Linda Stevens. There were more than enough pencils available for those of us who didn`t have there own. The demonstration was excellent. Linda explained how and where the pencils are made.
There are several ways of using the pencils:-
· Sharpening the pencil so there is about half an inch of the "paint" showing and use a brush and water to activate the paint then paint directly on to the paper. Very useful when out and about because they are easy to carry and you can also use a pencil to remind you of a colour when sketching.
· Another way of using pencils outside is to scribble a square of colour on to the side of your paper and use a wet brush to take some of the paint to paint with.
· Using a knife to shave particles of paint on to wet paper which gives a very unusual effect.
· When using a much thicker paper/board use the end of a knitting needle to score the board with very small lines and use the dry pencil directly on the top of the scoring to make a very good fur effect.
So all in all I found the day very interesting and enlightening.
